It was certified 4× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on November 16, 1989 and is considered to be one of the band's best albums. The songs "Creeping Death", "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Fade to Black" were released as singles and music videos with Ride The Lightning-era footage were shot for them.

According to AllMusic reviewer Steve Huey, Ride the Lightning was an album that "built upon their debut's strengths: speed, forcefulness, and technical prowess". He also said that "the songwriting had improved considerably".
